For 14 years, Craft the Leather existed only by academic invitation, open exclusively to students and faculty from the world's leading design schools. One week inside the vegetable-tanned leather district of Tuscany. You will visit the tanneries, understand the supply chain, and immerse in the meditation of making & experimenting; guided alongside an Italian master craftsman.
End with something you made with your own hands, and a material understanding of one of the world's oldest craft traditions.
What is included:
7 nights accommodation at Santa Chiara Conservatory (exclusive to only educational programming — never for public residencies).
All leather materials, tools and hides
Small group guidance by a master Italian craftsman
Vera Pelle Consortium HQ visit and tannery tour
Most meals, from welcome dinner through farewell dinner. Slow food. Authentic Italian cooking.
Cultural excursion (TBD — October seasonals include olive oil pressing or wine vineyard visit)
